How To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from natural diamonds to loose gemstones. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating loose gemstones or loose diamonds. Some people even begin to visit different areas nearby or in other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this sounds like a hobby you would like to get involved in read along as this article discusses the things you should know to start this hobby.

To begin with you need to learn all you can on the various gemstones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from wasting your money. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.

One of the first things you look at Is gemstone color. Top grade gemstones exhibit colors similar to the exact spectral color of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Gemstone colors that are muted or too dark are diminished in value.

How the gemstone is cut is the second most important factor to look at. The preciseness of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

The next factor to consider is the gemstone's clarity. This is talking about the purity of the stone with no internal conclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Obsidian, Topaz or Onyx for instance. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. Take the example of the United States. In Montana you'll find Agate, Sapphire, Beryl, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Tourmaline and Garnet.

How To Start Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. A number of people taken up this profession as a hobby. They become interested in making a collection of loose diamonds or loose gemstones. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas close by to look for rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If you have an interest in this hobby read along as this article discusses the different aspects of this hobby.

To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some reading material. You want to know as much as possible about your new hobby. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You need to be as informed as possible.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer the color comes to its pure spectral color the more valuable it is. Traditionally, these specter colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Gemstones colors that are darker or paler tend to be less valued.

Gemstone cut is one of the most important traits when you value gemstone. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color tone, saturation, and hue will never be consistent.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference of specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety in gemstones you can collect. You could try collecting Jasper, Opal (Girasol) or Clinohumite for instance. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the US. In Georgia you can find Ruby, Beryl, Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet and Quartz.

The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

For many people collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the wide array of gemstones found worldwide today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.

The first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the intelligent way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

Color is a subjective idea but a very important part in giving value to a gemstone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be darker or paler are considered a lower value.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds along with gemstones. An excellent cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent way to determine the excellence regarding the cut of the gemstone is how consistently it reflects the light over its entire surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, much of the light will refract out of the gem instead of reflecting inside. That will make the gem seem washed out and windowed.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone. Normally large flaws are visible to the naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Arizona you can find Agatized wood (Petrified wood), Azur-Malachite, Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Jasper and Moissanite Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the quartz regions in Beechworth and Mooralla in Victoria Australia.
