So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? For many people it's because they've been sought for their beauty for many centuries. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Read long as we look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to know as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

The first item to take into account should be the color of the stone. You want the stone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectrum colors. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices of very dark are very pale semiprecious and precious stones are less per carat.

Gemstone cut is one of the most important traits when you consider a gemstone's value. The cut has to be done with precision to reflect the light properly. A stone that has a poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. Color saturation, hue and tone will never look consistent.

The clarity in a stone is an important consideration. Gemstone clarity relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A flawless gemstone is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Serious hobbyists will buy an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Gemstones are often categorized according to size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can end up with some very beautiful stones. Many people loved to spend weekends to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Utah You can find Topaz, Garnet, Petrified Wood, Jasper and Obsidian. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.

is brittle. This brittleness makes the Tanzanite gemstone require special care
