So You Want To Collect Loose Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to find, collect and finish the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. This article will look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.
The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you learn about each kind of gemstone the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.
First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even become associated with particular ones. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They are valued much less the farther they deviate from the natural color.
Gemstone cut is an important factor to consider when evaluating gemstones. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut will never be able to reflect light consistently. The hue, tone and color saturation will be inconsistent.
Next up is the aspect of clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Any large flaws can be seen with the naked eye while others need a 10X magnification.
You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different in prices as well. This is due to the difference of relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Take each gemstone and think of it as a piece of art, a miniature sculpture to be treasured for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Utah You can find Topaz, Garnet, Petrified Wood, Jasper and Obsidian. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in the Frances Lake area in the Yukon Territory or amazonite (microcline) near Eganville, Onttario as well as iolite from Manitouwadge, Ontario. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids.
I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and
said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed the shell
to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her
ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
