Starting The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. Read long as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know everything there is to know about your new hobby. The more you learn about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You will know exactly what to look for.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they have even lent their names to specific colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They become less valuable the more they move away from the spectral color.

The cut of your gemstone is an important aspect to consider in determining gemstone value. The gemstone must be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A stone that has a poor cut will be muted or washed out. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will be inconsistent.

The clarity in a stone is the next item to consider. Clarity refers to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A perfect gemstone is more valuable. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Most hobbyists will buy an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for examining coins, stamps and of course gemstones.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the difference in specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in gemstones you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Kunzite, Agate or Tourmaline and then try others. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. For example in Wyoming you can find Agate (including Moss Agate), Jade, Ruby, Jasper, Bloodstone as well as Star Sapphire.

Hints On discounted loose diamonds

Gemstones are generally sold by weight, and not by size. The price will be per
carat, which is one-fifth of a gram. Some gems are heavier than others so the
same weight stone may be a different size! The carat weight also affects the
price: large gemstones are more rare, so the price per carat is higher.

The colour intensity of an emerald depends on the chromium quantities. Maytime
Grass is considered to be the most beautiful. An emerald is one of the few
stones that actually will shine in the dark when a small amount of light appears
in the room. The colour occurs when the geochemical makeup of beryllium and
chromium are found together. The combination is not easily found, and considered
to be a rare phenomenon. Natural chemical processes are what really form the
stones.

Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They love the colors and the beauty Of the assorted number of gemstones found worldwide today. Read long as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting this interesting gemstone hobby.

The first step in becoming a gemstone collector the proper way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will make you an informed buyer.

First on your list to factor in is stone color. You want the gemstone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectrum colors. We are talking about red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.

How the gemstone is cut is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase is made. The preciseness of the cut will determine how much light the stone will reflect. It will ultimately factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Another factor to consider is the gemstone's clarity. This is talking about the purity of the stone or the absence of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next on the agenda is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is a wide range and variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Chrysocolla, Topaz or Natural moissanite for example. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Just in the United States in Maryland you can search for Beryl and Clam Pearl.

Authentic emeralds are very expensive, and not available to the casual collector
. However, with today.s technology scientists can make lab-created emeralds that
can be sold at affordable prices on the open market. They are made by exposing
thin slices of natural beryl to a chemical mixture that is akin to an authentic
emerald. The mixture is one of pure filtered water and acids. Then it is put
under intense heat in saline solution. Then the stone slices cool until crystal
forms and it reaches a gem like thickness. When this process is complete it can
be cut and processed like a gem.

The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do in beginning this hobby the proper way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will make you an informed buyer.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gemstones are so related to color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value they closer they are to natural spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they are from the pure natural color.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds but along with your gemstones. A precision cut gemstone highlights the pure color of the stone, lessen any inclusions and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way of determining the excellence regarding the cut is how well it reflects light on a consistent basis over the stones complete surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting inside. Gem color appears washed out.

Our next consideration is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Next item to look at is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Collecting gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is a wide range and variety when it comes to gemstones. You could try collecting Obsidian, Sugilite Zeolite (Thomsonite) and then try others. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Just in the United States in Pennsylvania you can find Amethyst, Almandite Garnet and Pyrope Garnet, Beryl, Sunstone and Moonstone.
